Global markets, still struggling to recover from the negative effects of the covid pandemic, now have to grapple with the effect on energy, gas and food as a result of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Various economies report food shortages and record inflation figures as price of oil and gas soar. European nations, in particular, expect further increases in the cost of living as they brace for a fuel crisis in the coming winter.
The story in Africa is not any better. At the dawn of the 2020’s, Africa seemed to be embarking on a decade of unprecedented economic growth through promoting cooperation such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA), the implementation of agenda 2063 and widespread diffusion of technological innovation, this being a sign of a better Africa. The pandemic and growing economic instability within Europe, as well as Africa’s own inherent challenges, have taken its toll on this momentum. African countries are still divided into 55 independent markets which has hampered the economic growth and sustainable development of the continent. As a result, it has created dependency on exports from other countries especially countries in the global north with intra-African exports amounting to only 16.6% of total exports according to the Institute of Security Studies. This is irrespective of the prospects that Africa possess.

The economic global order, like any other order, is making shifts to a new world order. There have been instances where the institutions that govern the economic structure of the world have been seen to fail to deliver on their mandate. This nonetheless has given other economies opportunities to manoeuvre and strengthen their economies. For instance, China is in the process of surpassing the US economically and there by define the future of business. It was estimated by the institute of security studies that 35% of the world economic growth from 2017 to 2019 came from China, 18% from the US, 9% from India and 8% from Europe. By 2050, projections are that the top five largest global economies are mostly likely to be China, India, Brazil and Africa. This shows a sign of what the new economic giants will be. The world order today is perceived to be at risk; and Africa needs to make a time-sensitive decision to assess and implement effective strategies to better position itself as a force to reckon with in this new world order.
The G-PAD Forum is a platform where civil society actors and experts come together, address development issues, network and work together to strengthen cooperation between Baden-Württemberg and African regions. The 2022 edition considers Africa’s prospects in the growing risk of the current international order, the challenges presented, and how to harness such prospects. Discussions will border on three main perspectives: energy, technology, and the economy.
